Water Bonsai Plant: Croton

Good Day!

Today I would share something about the most compatible plant for making you water bonsai. That is the Croton (Codiaeum variegatum). Crotons are locally known in the Philippines as “San Francisco”. Croton has hundreds of varieties with names like Dreadlocks, Ann Rutherford (see photo below), Mona Lisa, and Irene Kingsley. Since crotons are genetically unstable each plant is unique.  It also appears to have it all from its colourful foliage, a nearly limitless leaf forms which could be curling, twisted, oak like leaf, narrow, broad and oval and a cultish following.

So start roaming around your place and look for varieties of croton. We also encourage you to try any plant available in your locality. :)

Happy water bonsai making!

Water Bonsai Seminars and Workshops

The introduction of water bonsai in the local community started way back 2010.

Among the initial recipients of the seminars and workshops done by Mary Montemayor were the brethren from Pugo, La Union. In addition, students from Don Rufino Olarte Memorial High School in Tubao, La Union were taught as well.

Water bonsai seminars and workshops were also conducted at Anduyan National High School, San Alberto Magno Academy and Tubao National High School. All schools were located in Tubao, La Union. Those seminars were conducted on the third quarter of 2011.

Students and locales greatly appreciated the introduction of this new technology. As a matter of fact, those who were taught how to make water bonsai presented their finished products as projects in their Home Economics subject.

Mizu Bonsai Garden is so glad by these turn out! We are so happy to see students learning this new craft and somehow put on their creativity cap as they explore on different plants and designs suited for the water bonsai technology!

With the inspiration we've received from the students, the faculty and the local community, Mizu Bonsai Garden commits itself of conducting more seminar-workshops to all interested schools, organizations and individuals.

We look forward on working with more people and teaching them this eco-friendly technology!
